As we continue our exploration into the powerful names of God, we’ve journeyed through several revelations of His nature. We began with 𝘑𝘦𝘩𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘩-𝘉𝘰𝘳𝘦—the Lord our Creator, who fashioned the universe and each one of us. Then we looked at 𝘑𝘦𝘩𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘩-𝘑𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘩—the Lord our Provider, who meets our every need, often in ways we couldn’t imagine. Most recently, we explored 𝘑𝘦𝘩𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘩-𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘮—the Lord our Peace, who gives us wholeness and calm even in the most turbulent times.

Today, we encounter 𝙅𝙚𝙝𝙤𝙫𝙖𝙝-𝙉𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙞, a name that declares God as our banner, our protector, and the one who goes before us in every battle.

Jehovah-Nissi is a combination of Jehovah, meaning "The Existing One" or "Lord," and Nissi, meaning "banner" or "flag." Together, it translates to "The Lord is My Banner." The name is revealed in the story of Israel’s battle against the Amalekites, where God shows His mighty power to deliver and protect His people.

We find Jehovah-Nissi in Exodus 17:15-16, during a critical moment for the Israelites:

"𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘔𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘵 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘢𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘪𝘵, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘐𝘴 𝘔𝘺 𝘉𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳, 𝘴𝘢𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨, '𝘈 𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘶𝘱𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘳𝘥! 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘳 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘈𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘬 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯.'" (𝘌𝘹𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘴 17:15-16, 𝘌𝘚𝘝)

The Amalekites had attacked Israel at a vulnerable moment, but under the leadership of Moses, Joshua led the army to victory. As long as Moses held up his staff, Israel prevailed in battle. When his hands grew weary, Aaron and Hur stood by his side to support him, lifting his hands until the battle was won. Afterward, Moses built an altar and named it Jehovah-Nissi to commemorate God’s role in their victory.

A banner or flag in ancient times was a rallying point, often raised in battle to give soldiers hope and a sense of purpose. By naming God Jehovah-Nissi, Moses declared that the Lord was the rallying point and source of victory for the Israelites. This title reminds us that we are not alone in our battles—God is our banner, the one who leads us and fights for us.
