FOUNDATIONS: Why Foundations Matter

Scripture Focus

Take a few minutes to read these passages slowly before continuing. If possible, read them directly from your Bible and ask God to speak to you through His Word.

Matthew 7:24–27 & Colossians 2:6–7

Every structure depends on what it’s built on.

You can’t see a foundation once a house is finished, but everything about the house depends on it. When storms come—and they always do—the strength of what’s underneath determines what stays standing.

Jesus tells a story in Matthew 7 that feels simple but cuts straight to the heart of faith. Two people build houses. Same effort. Same location. Same storms. The difference isn’t what they built—it’s what they built on.

One house stands.
One collapses.

The storm didn’t create the weakness.
It revealed it.

That truth matters more than ever.

We live in a time when faith is often reduced to feelings, preferences, or opinions. Many people believe in God, but fewer understand why they believe—or what their faith is actually rooted in. And when pressure comes, uncertainty follows.

Foundations aren’t about having all the answers. They’re about knowing where your faith stands when life shakes it.

Paul writes in Colossians 2, “Just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in Him, rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught.”
Notice the language: rooted, built up, strengthened. Faith is meant to grow deeper, not just wider.

This series exists because spiritual growth doesn’t happen by accident. Faith matures when we understand what we believe—and why it matters. Not so we can win arguments, but so we can live with confidence, humility, and peace.

Here’s the good news:
You don’t need a seminary degree.
You don’t need perfect theology.
You don’t need to have it all figured out.

You just need a willingness to grow.

Foundations are built slowly. Brick by brick. Truth by truth. Over time, they shape how we see God, how we see ourselves, and how we live in the world.

And when storms come—as they will—a grounded faith doesn’t panic. It stands.

Why This Matters

What you believe shapes:

  • How you respond to hardship

  • How you handle doubt

  • How you see God

  • How you live out your faith daily

A shallow faith struggles under pressure.
A grounded faith grows through it.

This series isn’t about checking spiritual boxes. It’s about strengthening your walk with God so your faith can endure, mature, and flourish.

Practical Application

This week, begin laying or strengthening your foundation:

  1. Ask yourself honestly:
What is my faith currently built on—habit, emotion, tradition, or truth?

  2. Commit to growth, not perfection.
Decide now that this season is about learning and deepening—not performing.

  3. Stay rooted in Scripture.
Even a few verses a day can reshape how you think and live over time.

  4. Invite God into the process.
    Growth starts with openness.

Reflection Questions

  • What storms have revealed weaknesses in my faith before?

  • Where do I feel confident in my beliefs—and where do I feel unsure?

  • What would it look like for my faith to be more rooted and grounded?

Guided Prayer

Lord, I want a faith that stands firm—not just when life is easy, but when it’s hard. Help me build my life on Your truth. Strengthen my understanding, deepen my trust, and guide me as I grow. Lay a solid foundation in my heart that lasts. Amen.
