Sometimes God calls the least likely people for the most powerful purposes.
David wasn’t anyone special by human standards. He was the youngest of eight brothers. Left out in the field with the sheep. Forgotten, really. When the prophet Samuel came to anoint the next king of Israel, Jesse didn’t even bother calling David in. Why would he? He wasn’t king material.
But God saw something different.
“For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” - 1 Samuel 16:7 (ESV)
This verse hits deep. We live in a world obsessed with the outside—talent, looks, achievements, platforms. But God? He’s searching for hearts that are willing. Trusting. Obedient.
David’s story reminds us that God doesn’t call the qualified. He qualifies the called.
You might feel overlooked right now. Or like you’ve been stuck in a "field" while everyone else seems to be doing something more important or more visible. But don’t miss this: God saw David in the field, and that’s exactly where He called him from.
He’s doing the same with you.
Reflection Questions:
1. Have you ever felt overlooked or underestimated? How does David’s story encourage you in that?
2. Where in your life might God be preparing you, even if it feels like you’re just “tending sheep”?
3. What does it mean to you that God looks at the heart? How would your life look different if you truly lived for His approval and not others’?
