Scripture Focus
Take a few minutes to read these passages slowly before continuing. If possible, read them directly from your Bible and ask God to speak to you through His Word.
Psalm 145:8–9, Exodus 34:6–7 & Colossians 1:15–20
Every deep foundation begins with knowing the One we build on.
Before faith can grow strong, it must be rooted in the truth of who God really is. It’s one thing to believe in God in a general sense—but it’s a very different thing to know Him intimately and understand His character as revealed in Scripture.
Some people see God mainly as a rule-giver. Others see Him primarily as a distant creator. But the Bible paints a picture far richer and more personal than either of those alone.
In Psalm 145, David bursts into praise because God is good, always good. Verse 8 says:
“The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.”
That’s not wishful thinking—that’s God describing Himself.
In Exodus 34, God reveals His own character to Moses:
He is compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. This is the God Jesus points us back to again and again.
Jesus Himself said that whoever has seen Him has seen the Father. In Colossians 1, Paul describes Jesus as the image of the invisible God, the One through whom all things were made and in whom all things hold together.
Knowing God’s character matters. Why? Because what you believe about God shapes:
-
How you pray
-
How you trust Him in hard seasons
-
How you respond to disappointment
-
How boldly you live for Him
If we think God is distant, we’ll tend to live in fear.
If we think God is capricious, we’ll be slow to trust.
But when we see God as He reveals Himself in Scripture—holy, gracious, loving, merciful—our faith can rest in Him with confidence and hope.
Understanding God isn’t a one-time study. It’s a lifelong journey. But every step we take in Scripture helps us know Him better, trust Him more fully, and stand firmer when life gets tough.
Why This Matters
Our faith isn’t built on vague ideas.
It’s built on the character of God revealed in Scripture.
When we misunderstand God, our faith becomes shaky.
When we know God, our faith becomes steady.
We don’t believe in something — we believe in Someone who is trustworthy, merciful, and powerful.
That changes everything.
Practical Application
This week, take specific steps to know God more deeply:
-
Read the passages listed above daily.
Meditate on God’s character — not just the facts, but the heart behind them. -
Journal one attribute of God each day.
What stands out? How does that change your view of Him? -
Talk to God about who He is.
Let your prayer be shaped by what Scripture reveals, not just your needs. -
When you feel weak or unsure, remind yourself of His character.
God doesn’t change — even when your circumstances do.
