PEACE IN THE NOISE: God Still Speaks

Published on 27 May 2026 at 07:55

In our last study, we talked about Elijah and the incredible moment in 1 Kings 18 where God moved in a powerful way.

Fire fell from heaven.
The prophets of Baal were defeated.
The people saw the power of the one true God.

It was a mountaintop moment.

But then, just one chapter later, Elijah is afraid, exhausted, overwhelmed, and hiding in the wilderness after being threatened by Jezebel.

That alone should encourage us.

Because sometimes we think strong faith means we never struggle.

But Elijah struggled.

He felt discouraged.
He felt alone.
He felt emotionally drained.

And honestly, many of us know exactly what that feels like.

There are seasons where life gets so loud, stressful, and overwhelming that we begin wondering where God is in the middle of it all.

We pray, but heaven feels quiet.
We open our Bible, but our minds are distracted.
We want direction, peace, and clarity, but instead we feel exhausted and spiritually tired.

That’s where Elijah was.

And then something incredible happens.

In 1 Kings 19, Elijah stands on the mountain before the Lord. Scripture says a great and powerful wind tore through the mountains—but God was not in the wind.

Then there was an earthquake.
But God was not in the earthquake.

Then came a fire.
But God was not in the fire.

And after all of that…

A whisper.

1 Kings 19:12 says:

“And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.”

Some translations say “a still small voice.”

God spoke to Elijah through the whisper.

Why?

Because sometimes God does His deepest work in the quiet.

We often expect God to speak through dramatic moments, instant answers, or giant signs. And yes, God can absolutely work that way. But many times, God speaks softly through His Word, through prayer, through conviction, through peace, and through quiet moments with Him.

The problem is that our lives are often so loud that we miss the whisper.

We fill every silent moment with noise.
TV.
Scrolling.
Podcasts.
Music.
Notifications.
Stress.
Schedules.

And eventually we become spiritually distracted.

But God still speaks.

Not because culture is calm.
Not because life is easy.
Not because we finally “have it all together.”

God speaks because He is a loving Father who still draws near to His people.

One of the biggest lies we can believe is:
“God doesn’t speak anymore.”

But the truth is, God speaks through His Word every single day.

Hebrews 4:12 reminds us:

For the word of God is living and active…”

God’s Word is not outdated.
It is alive.
It still convicts.
It still encourages.
It still guides.
It still changes hearts.

Sometimes the issue is not that God is silent.

Sometimes the issue is that we’ve surrounded ourselves with so much noise that we struggle to slow down long enough to listen.

And maybe today, God is inviting you to do exactly what Elijah had to do:
Pause.
Be still.
Listen.

Because even in the noise of life…

God still speaks.

Reflection Questions

  • What distractions make it difficult for you to slow down and hear from God?

  • Do you tend to expect God only in big dramatic moments?

  • How can you intentionally create quiet time with God this week?
