When did sex become so ordinary?
It's everywhere — in our shows, our music, our feeds, our jokes. We see it constantly. And yet, somehow, it still wrecks people. It wrecks marriages. It wrecks self-worth. It wrecks families. It leaves people with questions they're too embarrassed to ask and wounds they're too ashamed to name.
So let's talk about it. Not with a lecture. Not with a list of rules. Let's talk about it honestly — and let's see what God actually says.
The World's Answer
If you ask the culture, the answer is simple: Your body. Your choice. And if two adults freely choose it, what's the problem?
It's a reasonable question. And it sounds freeing — right up until you look at what's actually happening.
Sex has become content. It's become entertainment. It's become a punchline, a plot device, a product. People build platforms around it. It can be recorded, shared, traded, and consumed — and somewhere in all of that, we forgot that there are real human beings on the other side of the screen.
And here's what's strange: We keep being told that sex is casual, yet the consequences often aren’t. Affairs still destroy families. Betrayal still shatters trust. Abuse still leaves scars that last decades. Rejection still makes people question whether they're worth loving at all.
If it's "just sex," why does it hurt like this?
So What is Sex Actually For?
It's not a commodity. It's not a weapon. It's not a test run. It's not a performance.
It's a gift — meant to be opened in the right place, at the right time, with the right person. And when it's treated that way, it doesn't just feel good. It means something.
But even if you've treated it cheaply, or had it treated cheaply against you — that's not the end of your story. Jesus specializes in making things new. Bodies. Hearts. Histories. He's not afraid of yours.
Maybe it's time we stopped whispering. Maybe it's time we looked at what God actually designed, instead of what the culture settled for.
What if sex is far more sacred than we've been treating it?
So What Did God Actually Say?
Here's the surprise: the Bible isn't anti-sex. Not even close.
Sexual union is part of God’s good design in creation — before the fall, before sin, before shame.
Genesis 2:24 (ESV) says “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”
That verse tells us that a man leaves his father and mother, is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. God didn't design sex as a transaction or a performance. He designed it as a union where two lives are woven together in a way that is physical, relational, and deeply personal.
That's why it's so powerful. And that's why it's so painful when it's broken.
Sex is never just physical. It can be beautiful. It can create trust, intimacy, joy, even new life. But it can also create betrayal, shame, confusion, and deep, deep wounds. The fire that warms a home is the same fire that burns one down. It all depends on where it's lit and who it's shared with.
It's Not Just a Rule. It's a Design.
When God says "wait," or "stay," or "this is the only place where this belongs" — He's not trying to ruin your fun. He's protecting something sacred.
Think about it this way: your body matters so much that God claims it.
1 Corinthians 6:15-20 (ESV) says:
“Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, ‘The two will become one flesh.’ But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.
Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”
Those verses tells us that you are not your own — you were bought at a price. Your body belongs to Christ. That's not a restriction. That's a promotion. You're not a product. You're not content. You're not "just" anything. You are a person made in the image of God, and the most intimate thing about you was never meant to be cheap.
This is why the Bible speaks of sex as belonging inside a covenant — one man, one woman, for life. Not because God is a prude. Because He knows what this kind of union does to a human heart, and He refuses to let it be used to destroy you.
But What If I've Already Messed Up?
Here's where this gets personal. And here's where the whispering usually starts.
Maybe you've done things you can't undo. Maybe things were done to you. Maybe you're living with guilt, or confusion, or a memory you've never told anyone about. Maybe you're in a relationship right now that you know isn't right, and you don't know how to get out. Maybe you've looked at things online that have rewired the way you see people. Maybe sex has been a source of pleasure for you and it's left you emptier every time.
If that's you — hear this clearly: you are not disqualified.
Christianity isn't the story of people who got their lives together and then found God. It's the story of broken people who found grace. "Such were some of you," Paul writes — were. Past tense. "But you were washed." There is no version of your story that puts you beyond the reach of Jesus.
God is not standing over you with folded arms. He's standing with open hands.
