Today, we look at Part 2 of "The Bible Doesn't Say That." If you haven't read Part 1, be sure to check out our blog.
So today, let's dive into a common saying we've all probably heard: "God helps those who help themselves." Interestingly, this phrase is not found in the Bible. But don't worry, there's still plenty of encouragement to be found in Scripture.
Our modern culture idolizes self-sufficiency. We're often told that everyone needs to take care of themselves first, to look out for number one, and to focus on our own needs before anyone else’s. However, God’s plan for our lives is the exact opposite. Jesus calls for us to seek after the kingdom of God first, not ourselves; if we do, everything else in life will fall into place.
This brings us to our key passage, Matthew 6:25-33. Jesus says, "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? ... But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
The key to this passage is verse 33. If we focus on seeking God, there will be nothing in life we need to worry about. Our relationship with God needs to be our top priority. Following Jesus is about living a selfless life, trusting that God will take care of our necessities when we prioritize His kingdom.
Success Magazine published an article on the three mistakes most people make when setting priorities: “They don’t think about it. They make it too complicated. They don’t live their priorities.” Seeking first the kingdom of God is a simple priority, but it can be challenging to live out. Do you say God is your top priority—the very center your world revolves around—and then not live like this is true?
One of the most reassuring verses is Psalm 46:1: "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." Notice it doesn't say, "God is our refuge and strength once we've managed to sort everything out ourselves." Instead, God is present and ready to help us amidst our struggles.
Another powerful verse is Isaiah 41:10: "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Here, God promises His strength and support without any prerequisites. He is always ready to help us.
And here's the best part: God’s love for us isn't based on how much we can do on our own. Romans 5:8 says, "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." God's love is proactive, reaching out to us even when we're at our lowest.
Let's add a touch of humor. Imagine trying to clean your house before the cleaning service arrives – it kind of defeats the purpose, right? Similarly, we don't need to have our lives perfectly together before God steps in to help. He's not waiting for us to be perfect; He's ready to meet us right where we are.
So, the next time you're feeling overwhelmed and think you must handle everything yourself, remember that God is right there, ready to assist. You don't have to do it alone. Reach out to Him, trust in His love, and know that He is your strength and refuge.
Let’s encourage one another to rely on God’s help, not just our own efforts. After all, He’s truly skilled at being God – let’s allow Him to do His work!
For further encouragement, consider these verses: Philippians 4:13, Matthew 11:28-30, and 1 Peter 5:7. They remind us that God has us covered, no matter the circumstances. Keep the faith and stay positive!
