The Bibe Doesn't Say That: Part 1

Have you ever heard someone say, "God doesn't give you more than you can handle"? It's a phrase that's often shared in moments of struggle, meant to offer comfort and strength. While it's a well-intentioned sentiment, it's not actually found in the Bible. Instead, let's explore what the Bible does say about handling life's challenges and how God supports us through them.

First, let's clarify where this idea might come from. Many people refer to 1 Corinthians 10:13, which says, "No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." This verse is about temptation, not about the trials and burdens of life. It reassures us that God provides an escape from temptation, but it doesn’t promise that life’s challenges will always be manageable on our own.

Life can be overwhelming. We face illness, loss, financial hardship, and many other trials that feel like too much to bear. But the good news is that we are not meant to handle these things alone. Psalm 46:1 reminds us, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." When life gets tough, God is there to be our refuge and source of strength. We don't have to rely solely on our own ability to manage; we can lean on Him.

Moreover, 2 Corinthians 1:8-9 shares the Apostle Paul's experience with overwhelming hardship: "We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead." Paul acknowledges that their trials were beyond their capacity to endure, but these trials pushed them to rely on God. This is a powerful reminder that our struggles can draw us closer to God, teaching us to depend on His strength rather than our own.

Jesus also offers us comfort in Matthew 11:28-30: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Jesus invites us to bring our burdens to Him, promising rest and relief. He doesn't say we won't face heavy burdens; rather, He offers to share them with us, making them lighter through His love and support.

So, instead of thinking that God won't give us more than we can handle, let's remember that God helps us handle all that we are given. He is our refuge, our strength, and our ever-present help in trouble. When we face life's challenges, we can find hope and encouragement in knowing that we don't have to face them alone. God walks with us, providing the strength, comfort, and support we need to endure and overcome.

In moments of struggle, turn to Scripture and find solace in God's promises. Share your burdens with Him and with your community of faith. Remember that it's okay to admit when things are too much, because that's when we can truly experience God's power and love at work in our lives.
